Picked as one of the top films of 2001 in a poll of 40 film critics, Audition has been called "a well crafted, visually deft piece of grand guignol" (Nick James, Sight and Sound). Deceptively innocent at first, Audition finds Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) middle aged widower of many years, urged by his teenage son and film producer friend Yoshikawa devises a plan to hold a phony audition for a non-existent film. After interviewing 30 young hopefuls, Aoyama falls for the demure and alluring actress Asami (fashion model Eihi Shiina in her film debut), a former ballerina with a suspicious past. Their courtship veers from polite romance to psycho-nightmare in the bat of a pierced eye-lid, realizing "a sadistic breach of contract between filmmaker and audience of which Hitchcock could only dream." (Richard Falcon, Sight and Sound)

An audition from hell - 3 out of 5 (4/27/2002)
I watched the movie AUDITION based on the recommendation of a friend who said it was "the most twisted @#$!in movie he had ever seen!"
This of course caused me to hunt down a copy to watch at any cost. I finally ordered a region 2 disc off a Japanese import site and I paid way too much for the most twisted @#$%in movie he had ever seen, especially considering the fact that I had gotten a region free screener from Ventura who plans to market the film in a better version later in the year.

miike is the king - 5 out of 5 (7/18/2002)
i first heard of takashi miike searching for disturbing movies, when i found him, i found what has to be the last stop in horror, yakuza, art sinema (purposed mispelled), and splatter, not many people can claim this, in fact i know of none other. audition, had me interested in the story of a middle aged man searching for love and finding a ravishing young girl who had found interest in him, the story of the relationship is built and developed flawlessly, although slow, it was still interesting.

Truly Unsettling - 3.25 out of 5 (6/11/2002)
I happened upon a screening of "Audition" at a local film festival and knew nothing about the film besides that it was a Japanese thriller by Takashi Miike who is known for his startlingly uncompromising direction and material. I hadn't seen one of his films yet so I was looking forward to believing the hype. After viewing "Audition," a superb film, I can say it contains one of the most disturbing scenes I have ever seen on film that really stuck with me.
I don't want to spoil the premise for
